Frequently Asked Questions

What type of toothbrush should I use?

The bristle type and size of the head is more important than the brand of toothbrush. We recommend a soft toothbrush with a small head as medium and hard brushes tend to cause irritation and contribute to recession of the gums.

A soft toothbrush with a smaller head allows you to get around each tooth more effectively and is less likely to injure your gums. As long as you brush your teeth at least twice a day and visit your dentist at least twice a year for dental exams, it is unnecessary to “scrub” the teeth.

Is there a superior toothpaste?

Generally, no. However, using toothpaste that contains fluoride can decrease the incidence of dental decay. We recommend patients use what tastes good to them as long as it contains fluoride.

How often should I floss?

It’s recommended to floss your teeth once per in order to help prevent cavities from forming between the teeth and keep your gums healthy. Maintaining good gum health is important, as research has linked gum disease to numerous systemic diseases such as strokes and heart disease.

Difference between a “crown” versus a “cap”?

There is no difference between a dental crown and cap. Both are restorative dental treatments used to repair severely broken or decayed teeth. A cap (or crown) covers most/all of the tooth remaining after removing old fillings, fractured tooth structure, and decay. Restoration materials can include porcelain, gold, composites, and even stainless steel. Dentists refer to these restorations as crowns, whereas patients sometimes call them caps.

Difference between a “bridge” versus a “partial denture”?

Partials and bridges both replace missing teeth. A bridge is permanently attached to natural teeth or, in some cases, implants, whereas partial dentures are attached by clasps to the teeth that can easily be removed by the patient. Bridges are typically more satisfying to patients than partial dentures.

Does having a crown mean I need a root canal?

No. Most teeth do need crowns after a root canal treatment to restore strength and stability to a tooth, and return to its normal function and form. While you may need a crown after a root canal, not every tooth that needs a crown also needs a root canal.

Are over-the-counter teeth whitening products effective?

Many solutions can be purchased over-the-counter or from your dentist to whiten your teeth.

Bleaching solutions contain peroxide (typically carbamide peroxide) which actually bleaches the tooth enamel. These are usually available in different concentrations which range from 10% to 22%.

Only dentist-dispensed home-use 10% carbamide peroxide tray-applied gels carry the ADA Seal. However, many teeth whitening products have been proven to lighten tooth color. If you encounter sensitivity during treatment, please consult your dentist about the side effects of whitening treatments.

Why does my jaw click/pop, and what can I do about it?

More than 15% of Americans suffer from chronic facial pain, according to the ADA. Common symptoms include pain around the ear and clicking/popping noises when opening the mouth.

Facial pain, discomfort, and popping noises can be caused by improper function of the complex system of ligaments, muscles, and bones that make up the Temporomandibular joint. TMJ disorders can be treated in several ways, and it is critical to receive a proper diagnosis. Your dentist will recommend a specific treatment that addresses your particular problem. You may be referred to a specialist, and treatment may involve a series of steps.

How do I stop grinding my teeth?

Grinding your teeth in your sleep can have a negative impact on your health. Teeth grinders often experience dull headaches and a sore jaw, which sometimes leads to migraines. Severe grinding can also cause teeth to become worn, loose, or fractured. A custom-fit mouthguard can help protect your teeth while you sleep. Our dental team will work with you to determine which treatment option aligns with your needs.

Automatic Reminders

To ensure you never miss or forget about an appointment, our office provides automatic appointment reminders. We’ll mail a card to you about two weeks before your appointment and give you a phone call the day before your visit.

Paperless Charting

Since 2015, the Federal Government has mandated all healthcare offices implement paperless charting or electronic health records. This not only increases the efficiency of our office, but also allows patients easy access to their health information. Electronic health records make it easier to retrieve your medical and dental records and simplifies the billing process.

Electronic Claims

Electronic insurance claims cut down on the hassle of filing claims and paperwork. Our system, which contains all of your patient information, is updated daily. At the end of each work day, all claims are sent together. The claims information is then forwarded to your insurance company to be processed.
